Genuine RESTRAINT mental asylum straitjacket 1952 Soviet madhouse stamped

Genuine restraint straitjacket from Soviet mental asylum of Cold War era, it has round inventory ink stamp dated 1952 and some other text in russian [cyrylic script].

a strong garment with long sleeves that can be tied together to confine the arms of a violent prisoner or mental patient

Made from thick canvas type fabric double or triple sewn with very long sleeves that were tied at the back to incapacitate the wearer and prevent him from doing harm to himsef or people around him/her. I think this is universal size, worn kind of like apron in the way that the opening is at the back.

CONDITION: MINT, unused spare, it is crumpled but was never worn or washed.

Gruesome reality of life in Soviet Union under communist dictatorship was that many innocent people landed long incarceration in mental asylums especially in 1950`s that this item is dating. Famous Russian author and opposition activist Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn described in his books how Soviet authorities were sending opposition members and basically anyone contesting the system to mental asylums for indefinite periods without any court conviction that was not only to terrorize such individuals but also discredit credibility of their past and any future statements and opposition activity as "crazy nonsense".
